Most people have heard the phrase: “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.”
It’s one of those sayings people repeat when life gets hard. Sometimes it’s meant to inspire optimism. Sometimes it feels dismissive—like a quick way to move past pain.
But over time, I started thinking about that phrase differently.
Because real life lemons are rarely small inconveniences.
Sometimes the lemons people receive are things like trauma, grief, betrayal, burnout, illness, or circumstances completely outside of their control.
Those aren’t small things.
And no one simply wakes up one morning and effortlessly turns those experiences into something sweet.
Live Making Lemonade Daily
I began thinking about life the way we think about making lemonade in the kitchen.
Real lemonade always requires a few essential ingredients.
In the framework I developed, those ingredients look like this:
Water – the source that sustains us
For me, that has always been my relationship with God and a connection to something bigger than myself.
Lemon Juice – our life experiences
The good, the painful, the confusing, the transformative moments that shape who we become.
Sweetener – the tools that help us move forward
Things like coping skills, community, therapy, reflection, boundaries, and growth.
Each person’s lemonade recipe looks different.
But those ingredients are always present in some form.
And the work of healing is learning how to combine them in a way that creates something life-giving.
